Data Scientist – China Data Services

Rhodium Group is recruiting a Data Scientist to join the company’s China Data Services team. Preferred location is Rhodium’s offices in Paris, New York, or Washington, DC.

Position Description

Rhodium is looking for an entrepreneurial Data Scientist to join our world-class team of economists, policy analysts and researchers. Rhodium’s China Data Services team develops and maintains proprietary datasets that support private and public sector clients by analyzing opportunities and risks related to China’s growth and role in global markets. You will work with partners and researchers to promote the application of modern data science concepts across our research teams, improve existing proprietary data assets and lead the development of novel solutions for data-driven risk analytics and management. The position is most suited for candidates seeking to advance their careers further and aspire to progress into a Senior Data Scientist role.

Position Responsibilities

  • As the data steward of Rhodium’s China practice, the Data Scientist will build, manage, and optimize the practice’s data assets. This role will apply advanced data compilation and analytics methods such as data scraping and machine learning to support our analysts and senior staff in interpreting economic phenomena and policy outcomes.
  • One specific responsibility is to lead the further development of our proprietary database on China’s economic linkages with the world. This includes further automation and streamlining of the current data collection, storage and maintenance procedures, as well as applying state-of-the-art data analytics and data visualization tools to uncover new trends.
  • The Data Scientist will also be the technology lead for the development of a novel ESG data solution for foreign investors to manage risks investing in Chinese securities, and experiment with innovative solutions to transform unstructured text sources into structured data.
  • There will be opportunities to work with partners and senior researchers to make original contributions to impactful public policy and economics research. The role also includes the possibility to lead the exploration of novel research approaches, business models and datasets.

Qualifications

Eligible candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in data science, computer science, economics, or related disciplines (or bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of experience working in information technology, data analytics, or a related field).
  • 2+ years of experience working with data in the field of technology, applied research, finance, consulting, or a related field.
  • Passion for combining human and machine intelligence for applied economics and policy research; intrigued by the interpretability of data and data application for advanced business and public sector solutions.
  • Ability to design and build data pipelines and take ownership in governing data, including to implement data quality checks and maintain databases, based on corporate needs with product managers.
  • Experienced in manipulating and analyzing economic and/or unstructured data sets using a suite of analytics tools in python, R and SQL. Expert user of data analytics and visualization tools such as pandas or seaborn.
  • Professionalism and intellectual curiosity; organized and self-directed with proven problem-solving skills; proven ability to work with a diverse team.
  • Full working proficiency in English; advanced Mandarin Chinese reading skills required since significant share of raw data will be in Chinese language.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • The preferred location for this role is Paris, New York or Washington DC. Candidates must be eligible to work at one of these locations. Remote work is expected until in-office work resumes.
  • Occasional domestic or international travel (<5%).
