Research Analyst – China Data Services

Rhodium Group is recruiting a Research Analyst to join the company’s China Data Services team. Preferred location is Rhodium’s Paris, New York, or Washington DC office.

Position Description

Rhodium Group is looking for a Research Analyst to join our world-class team of economists, policy analysts, and researchers. Rhodium’s China Data Services team develops and maintains proprietary datasets that help businesses, the financial sector and governments navigate risks and opportunities related to China’s economic development and its impact on global markets. The Research Analyst role offers an opportunity to contribute to novel data solutions and deepen expertise in China-focused economic research.

Position Responsibilities

  • The Research Analyst will combine strong analytical skills and a strategic mindset with real-world perspectives to support other analysts and senior staff in building and maintaining data assets for the China Data Services team. This role will also conduct data analysis and market/policy research for the team’s diverse set of projects.
  • A primary responsibility is to support the development of a novel ESG data solution for foreign investors to manage risks investing in Chinese securities with our data scientist and product leader. This role will also support the maintenance of Rhodium China’s cross-border investment database, as well as related projects and client assignments.
  • Our analysts apply deductive and inductive approaches in research to attain reliable and accurate results; the Research Analyst should be able to observe important market and policy trends, integrate them into our datasets, and translate data patterns into valuable client insights.
  • The Research Analyst will have the opportunity to work with partners and senior researchers to make original contributions to impactful public policy and economics research and reports. This role will track and analyze ESG developments, China outbound investment trends and other topics as needed.


Eligible candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Social Sciences, Economics, Public Policy, or related fields (or bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of relevant work experience).
  • Detail-oriented, diligent, and data-driven; comfortable working with large datasets; experienced in data cleaning and management with full competency in Microsoft Excel required; skills in Python and/or SQL are also desirable.
  • A good understanding of China’s economy, business environments, as well as regulatory concepts; interests or familiarity with ESG discussions, finance, and international relations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods; capacity to work independently as well as in a team; inquisitive, used to challenge norms and tackle complex problems.
  • Full proficiency in spoken and written English. Advanced Mandarin Chinese reading skills required. Ideal candidates can read and interpret Chinese policy documents, official speeches, data, reports, media, and research.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • The preferred location for this role is Paris, New York or Washington DC. Candidates must be eligible to work at one of the locations. Given the current public health situation, remote work is acceptable, as necessary.
  • Occasional domestic or international travel (<5%)
