Research Assistant – China Data Services

Rhodium Group is recruiting a Research Assistant to join the company’s China Data Services team. The preferred location is Rhodium’s Paris, Washington DC, or New York office.

Position Description

Rhodium Group is looking for a Research Assistant to join our world-class team of economists, policy analysts, and researchers. Rhodium’s China Data Services team develops and maintains proprietary datasets that help businesses, the financial sector, and governments navigate risks and opportunities related to China’s economic development and its impact on global markets. The Research Analyst role is an entry-level position that offers an opportunity to gain experience in applied economic research and contribute to novel data solutions.

Position Responsibilities

  • The Research Assistant will combine rigorous research abilities with an analytical outlook to support analysts and senior staff in building and maintaining data assets for the China Data Services team. They will also conduct data analysis and market/policy research for the team’s diverse set of projects.
  • One key responsibility will involve maintaining and improving our cross-border investment database. This will entail data collection, entry, management, and quality control responsibilities as well as investigative work on individual transactions. This role will also support analytical work for other data solutions managed by the team.
  • The Research Assistant should be able to observe trends/patterns with policy and market implications while engaging with our datasets and draw valuable insights through rigorous data analysis.
  • There will be opportunities to work with partners and senior researchers to make original contributions to impactful public policy and economics research and reports. This role will track and analyze China’s global financial flows across the world, conduct research on Chinese companies, and other topics as needed.


Eligible candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Economics, Political Science, Finance, International Relations, or related fields.
  • Detail-oriented, diligent, and data-driven; comfortable working with large datasets; experienced in data cleaning and management with full competency in Microsoft Excel required; skills in Python and/or SQL also desirable.
  • Experience navigating through Chinese media, policy documents, and especially Chinese corporate data is highly desirable.
  • A good understanding of macroeconomic and financial concepts, especially foreign direct investment, venture capital, and other forms of global financial flows.
  • Full proficiency in spoken and written English; Advanced Mandarin Chinese reading skills required.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • The preferred location for this role is Washington DC, Paris, or New York. Candidates must be eligible to work at one of the locations. Given the current public health situation, remote work is acceptable, as necessary.
  • Occasional domestic or international travel (<5%)
