Over the past two years, Beijing has watched carefully as Western allies have deployed unprecedented economic statecraft against Russia. In June 2023, we analyzed possible G7 economic actions against China in the event of a Taiwan crisis and modeling their associated costs. However, our report largely left a critical question unanswered: how would China respond?

This new report examines China’s strategy to address US and broader G7 sanctions, focusing on its potential retaliatory measures and its means of sanctions circumvention.
